Chinese Frog Buttons are elegant details found on traditional garments. Making them is a delicate and beautiful craft. Follow this clear, step-by-step guide to create your own knot buttons.
1. Prepare Materials and Tools
First, gather everything you need for the project.
-
Materials: cotton, satin, and copper wire.
-
Tools: Scissors, needle and thread, tweezers, a bias tape maker, an iron, thumbtacks, and white latex glue.
2. Make the Fabric Strip (The Core)
This fabric strip forms the main body of your button.
-
Cut a piece of fabric. Make it 2 to 4 centimeters wide and long enough for your design.
-
Fold the fabric strip in half with the front side facing inward.
-
Pull the strip through the bias tape maker. Use an iron to press it flat and tight at the same time. Move slowly and repeat this ironing step 5 to 8 times.
-
Open the front side of the pressed strip. Apply white latex glue to the inside.
-
Place a copper wire inside. Make sure the wire matches the exact length of the fabric strip.
-
Fold the strip in half again. Iron it until it is perfectly flat and secure.
3. Coil the Flower Shape
Now, shape the prepared strip into a beautiful pattern.
-
Select a style: Choose your desired design. You can pick simple styles like the "Straight" knot or "Phoenix Tail" knot. You can also try complex styles like the "Pipa" knot or "Chrysanthemum" knot.
-
Form the design: Place a paper template on a baseboard. Put your fabric strip over the template. Follow the printed lines to weave, coil, and tie the strip. Use thumbtacks to hold the strip in place as you work.
-
Adjust and set: Use tweezers to carefully adjust the tension and symmetry as you coil. Once the shape looks perfect, apply a small amount of white latex glue to the back. This helps hold the initial shape.
4. Sew and Fill
This step secures the knot and makes the design look full.
-
Secure with stitches: Turn the button over. Use a thin thread that matches the fabric strip. Make invisible stitches (lock stitches) at the connecting joints on the back. Sew all the crossing strips tightly together. This ensures the flower shape will not fall apart.
-
Prepare the filling: Take a piece of fabric in a different, contrasting color. Cut it into small pieces and fill them with small bits of cotton.
-
Stuff the gaps: Push these cotton-filled pieces tightly into the open spaces of your coiled button. This adds beautiful color and fullness. Make sure the filling is tight. Do not leave any empty gaps and do not expose the raw cotton.
-
Seal the back: Close the back of the button to secure the filling. Apply a small amount of white latex glue to hold everything safely in place.
5. Final Trimming
Clean up your work to complete the button.
-
Take a new piece of fabric in the same color as your main strip. Cut it to match the exact shape and size of your button template.
-
Paste this fabric piece onto the glued back of your button. Press it down very firmly so it sticks well.
-
Cut away any loose threads and rough fabric edges.
-
Check the corners and details one last time.
-
Iron the button to set its final shape.
Your traditional Chinese knot button is now finished!
